I’ve been in this business for 27 years. I started before social media existed, so I feel that one to my core. It is challenging. There are sessions to shoot, galleries to edit, inquiries to answer and families to take care of, and now we’re supposed to be on camera too?
But here’s the truth: yes, we do need to show up.
Why showing up matters
Your next client is scrolling long before she ever sends an inquiry. She’s watching how you work, how you talk to families, what your studio looks like and whether you feel like someone she can trust with the most important photos of her life.
If she can’t see you, she books the photographer she can see. That’s not a judgment on your talent. It’s just how people find us now. Being seen is the new word of mouth.
